The Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic have beaten the Southern Steel 54 -47 in Tauranga in the trans-Tasman netball competition.

Magic captain Irene Van Dyk for the third game in a row against the Steel did not miss a shot, netting 38 from 38.

With 16 current or former Silver Ferns in the two teams the game was a virtual national trial.

While the Magic were clear winners they did not have it all their own way.

The Steel had more shots on goal, with 64 attempts to the Magic's 57.

The Magic next week play the New South Wales Swifts in Hamilton. They lost to the Swifts in last year's final.
