Gold Coast, Melbourne and Cronulla all had wins in the National Rugby League on Saturday.

The Titans took the honours in the Queensland NRL derby against North Queensland with a scrappy 14-10 victory in Townsville.

In an early shoot-out for the Queensland State of Origin halfback jersey, neither Johnathan Thurston or Scott Prince were able to lay claim to the No.7 jersey with both sides struggling to maintain possession in wet conditions before 18,123 fans.

In Melbourne the Storm edged Penrith 16-14 at Olympic Park in a hard-fought, yet scrappy affair as news emerged that Melbourne are apparently keen to pursue the former Parramatta half Brett Finch despite a promising performance by debutant James Maloney at five-eighth.

And Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart praised his team for their endeavour and spirit despite slumping to their fourth straight NRL defeat.

The Sharks, riddled with injury and suspensions, went down 24-14 to Canberra at Toyota Stadium in Sydney.
