Venus Williams was just as imperious, dispatching Spain's Carla Suarez 6-love 6-4 while the former world number one Jelena Jankovic crashed out, beaten by the American qualifier Melanie Oudin.
The French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova did likewise, knocked out in straight sets by unseeded German teenager Sabine Lisicki.
