The New Zealand decathlete Brent Newdick is in 19th place after the first day of the decathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin.
Newdick recorded personal bests in the high jump and long jump and was just outside his best in the 100 and 400 metres.
The 24 year old is on 4105 points, 450 points behind the leader Oleksiy Kasyanov of the Ukraine.
