Nelson rider Jack Bauer has increased his overall lead in the Tour of Southland, with three stages remaining.

Beijing Olympian Peter Latham won the 133 kilometre sixth stage from Lumsden to the Crown Range near Queenstown with Bauer finishing fourth but extending his overall lead from 14 to 25 seconds.

After a strong year in Belgium Bauer has also confirmed a he's picked up a professional contract for an English-based Pro Continental team for next year.

Zookeepers still retain the overall team lead.
