United go three points clear

6:21 pm on 23 April 2009

Manchester United have returned to the top of the English football Premiership with Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick scoring in their 2-nil victory over Portsmouth that turned the screws in the title race.

A less than convincing victory was enough to put United three points clear with a game in hand after they had been knocked off top spot yesterday by Liverpool's 4-all draw at home to Arsenal.

Chelsea are six points behind United, also having played a game more, after Guus Hiddink's side were held nil-all by Everton at Stamford Bridge in an FA Cup final rehearsal.

At Old Trafford Paul Scholes made his 600th United appearance.
