The World Cup-winning Kiwis captain Nathan Cayless has confirmed he has ended his 38-Test international rugby league career.

The 31-year-old says it's the right time to retire after leading the Kiwis to their historic 34-20 World Cup final win over Australia in Brisbane.

Cayless says it was a huge honour to be able to lead the first New Zealand team to win the World Cup.

But now he says want to put all his energy into Parramatta for the last couple of years of his career.

The Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney says Cayless will always have a special place in New Zealand rugby league's history after his outstanding job as captain last year.
