The Whakatane golfer Zoe Brake has gone one better than last year to claim the women's strokeplay title at the New Zealand Amateur Championships in Auckland.

The 17-year-old, who was runner-up last year in Wellington, finished with a four round total of even-par 292 at Remuera, three clear of Auckland's Cecilia Cho.

The top 32 players move on to the matchplay phase starting on Sunday at Titirangi where the internationals adapted best to the windy conditions to dominate the third round of the men's strokeplay.

The 18-year-old Australian Bryden MacPherson's five-under 65 moved him to a six-under 204, a two-shot lead over South Africa's Nicol van Wyk with four shots back to the world number one ranked Australian amateur Scott Arnold.

The best of the New Zealanders is 15-year-old Chan Young Chung from Wellington.

He's one-over on 211 after following his course record 64 on Thursday with a five-over 75.
