Newcastle remain in relegation zone

Newcastle United remain in deep relegation trouble after being held to a nil-all draw by Portsmouth in a tense English Premier League football match at St James' Park.

The result left Newcastle in the drop zone with 31 points and four matches to play, although they moved above north-east rivals Middlesbrough and up to 18th place.

Both teams have 31 points from 34 games, three behind Hull City in the safety of 17th place... West Bromwich Albion are bottom with 28 points.

Interim Newcastle boss Alan Shearer said before the match that only a win would do for Newcastle, but it was Portsmouth who came closest to scoring when Richard Hughes headed against the bar in the closing minutes.

Portsmouth are 14th on 38 points.
