Clubs back two referees

The National Rugby League's decision to have games controlled by two referees looks set to stay after an overwhelming endorsement from NRL chief executives.

Leading coaches Ricky Stuart from Cronulla and Manly's premiership-winning coach Des Hasler have both been vocal critics of the model's inadequacies, but a submission tabled on Monday at a meeting of club chief executives from the referees boss Robert Finch claimed two referees were having a positive effect on the game.

The NRL had reserved the right to revert to having just the sole referee when it announced the initiative last year, but chief executive David Gallop says the feedback from the meeting was generally very positive.
