Overdose probable cause of death of 21 polo horses

12:32 pm on 29 April 2009

The 21 polo horses that collapsed and died before a competition last week were given an overdose of the trace mineral selenium, a Florida laboratory study has confirmed.

The horses were part of a Venezuelan team and fell ill shortly before they were scheduled to begin the featured match of the US Open Polo tournament, the oldest and most prestigious in the United States.

Selenium is often included in small quantities in supplements and feed for horses.
