Bray agrees standard of refs has dropped

The rugby referees boss Lyndon Bray accepts the overall standard of refereeing in the Super 14 has slipped from previous years, but says it's impossible to replace experience overnight.

The All Blacks coach Graham Henry has criticised the standard of refereeing, saying while the top whistleblowers were performing well, there was a clear drop in quality in the rest in the Super 14.

Bray says after the recent retirements of four senior referees, there was always going to be a lack of experience at the top level but he's confident the overall standards have remained high.

He says the only way referees will improve is by spending more time in the middle.
