The Blues winger Rene Ranger has escaped being suspended from any further rugby matches, after being invovled in an altercation at Matakana, north of Auckland last month.

Ranger was charged with assault by police and is now being considered for diversion.

The NZRU's general manager of professional rugby Neil Sorensen has met with Ranger and says he accepts his behaviour amounted to serious misconduct.

Ranger was stood down for one match by the Blues in the wake of the incident, and Sorenson says he's also apologised to the person involved in the incident and paid him reparations.

Sorenson says Ranger has been told to complete and alcohol counselling programme and has also received a formal warning.
