Kiwis hooker fails to defend striking charge

12:15 pm on 8 May 2009

The Kiwis hooker Issac Luke was devastated after failing to beat a striking charge at the National Rugby League judiciary in Sydney.

Despite the charge being at the lowest end of the scale, it took the panelists Mal Cochrane, Bob Lindner and Ian Roberts less than 15 minutes to reach a surprise verdict, and Luke's one match ban rules him out of tonight's Anzac Test in Brisbane.

It's a major setback for the Kiwis, and Luke's South Sydney NRL coach Jason Taylor said they had a good case and the club was disappointed with the outcome for Luke, who was shattered by the decision.

Dean Halatau has been confirmed as the starting hooker.
