The Black Sticks midfielder Lloyd Stephenson has announced his retirement from the national men's hockey team after playing 102 Tests.

Stephenson is 27 and first played for New Zealand when he was 19.

He reached the 100-cap milestone during the recent series against India in

Auckland and Wellington.

Stephenson says he thought long and hard about his decision but he's qualified for a career in property finance and valuation and it's time to seek one.

He'll continue to play for Midlands in the National League.
