Red Sox notch 12 runs in one innings

8:19 am on 9 May 2009

The Boston Red Sox matched a modern Major League Baseball record with 12 runs in an inning before recording an out en route to a 13-3 victory over Cleveland.

Jason Bay hit a three-run home run and an RBI double and four other batters - Rocco Baldelli, Jeff Bailey, Dustin Petroia and George Kottaras - had two-run hits in the sixth inning, when Boston broke the American League record of 11 runs before an out was recorded in a frame.

Cleveland starter Jeremy Sowers gave up one run on four hits through five innings. But he left the game after allowing the first six batters to reach base in the sixth.

Masa Kobayashi, brought in to try to stop the bleeding, gave up hits to all five batters he faced.

Boston had nine hits and three walks in the inning before Matt Herges finally induced Mike Lowell to ground out. Herges then struck out Rocco Baldelli and got JD Drew to ground out.

In 1953, the Brooklyn Dodgers had 12 runs before recording an out in the eighth inning of a 16-2 victory at Philadelphia.

The Detroit Tigers held the previous American League record, with 11 runs in the sixth inning en route to a 19-1 victory at the New York Yankees in 1925.
