Team Columbia has won the time trial on the opening stage of the Giro d'Italia cycle race.

Britain's Mark Cavendish took the pink jersey as race leader having crossed the line first for the American team.

Columbia clocked 21 minutes 50 seconds for the 20.5-kilometre course.

New Zealander Julian Dean's Garmin-Slipstream team, who had trained especially for the team time trial around the streets of Venice's Lido, were second and Lance Armstrong's Astana third.

Dean finished 169th, a minute and 37 seconds behind Cavendish.
