Japan's Ryosuke Irie has smashed the men's 200-metre backstroke world record at the Duel in the Pool against Australia in Canberra.

Irie churned through the water to stop the clock at one minute, 52.86 seconds, bettering American Ryan Lochte's previous world record by more than one second.

Leaving the competition in his wake, Irie hit the wall more than five seconds ahead of Australia's Ashley Delaney in second place and fellow countryman Takashi Nakano in third.
