Another world swim record falls but will it stand?

The latest world record in the controversial hi tech swimsuits could be erased from the history books if the sport's governing body rules the illegal.

Japan's Ryosuke Irie took more than a second off the 200m backstroke world record at a meet in Canberra but it may not be ratified because he wore a hi-tech Arena swimsuit that FINA may rule illegal if it's decided it offers too much extra buoyancy.

The record follows the breaking of the 50m and 100m freestyle records last month in state-of-the-art Jaked and Arena suits last month.

However, FINA must approve the new suits for the records to also stand.
