Amateur still in with a chance at Irish Open

9:31 am on 17 May 2009

The Irish amateur golfer Shane Lowry kept up his hopes of a shock Irish Open victory when he ended the third round in a tie for the lead with Englishman Robert Rock.

The pair are locked together on 16-under-par 200.

Lowry, 16th on the world amateur rankings but a candidate for Britain and Ireland's Walker Cup team to play the U.S. in September, is bidding to become the third amateur winner on the European Tour in just over two years.

Although he cannot claim any prize money, victory would earn a two-year tour exemption when he decides to turn professional.

The pair have a 2 stroke lead.
