The Irish Golf Open has been won by the 22 year old local Shane Lowry, the third amateur to win on the European Tour.

Lowry, who had taken the lead with a course record second round of 62, beat the Englishman Robert Rock on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff after Lowry missed a short birdie putt that would have secured the title on the last hole of regulation play.

Rock's consolation prize for finishing second the last two weeks on the Eurpean tour was first place money of more than a miillion dollars.
