New Zealand's Brendon McCullum and Australia's Brad Hodg were the heroes as Kolkata shocked the Chennai Super Kings in an Indian Premier League thriller in South Africa.

The skipper McCullum opened and struck 81 of 48 balls while Hodge contributed an undefeated 71 as the Knight Riders scored a single off the last ball at Centurion Park to win by seven wickets chasing 189.

It's only the second win in 13 outings for the bottom team in the league, while a Chennai side lacking injured star batsman Matthew Hayden suffered their fifth loss of the group phase which finishes on Thursday.

Kolkata face the defending champions Rajasthan Royals and Chennai meet Kings XI Punjab on Wednesday night in a Durban double-header.
