Giants go top after beating the Saints at home

7:42 am on 24 May 2009

The Giants have beaten the Wellington Saints 79-70 in Nelson to go top of the National Basketball League after nine rounds.

It was tight all the way. Going into the fourth quarter the visiting Saints held a slender 53-50 lead and led by eight before the Giants tied the game up through a Tony Rampton dunk with just over five minutes to play.

Nearly two minutes later the game was tied up again for the last time 64-64 and then with 2:32 to play a Jarryd Lloyd dunk put the Giants ahead, a lead that would not be lost.

The Giants shot nine from 10 from the free throw line in the last minute of the game as the Saints were left with the desperate option of fouling.
