The Crusaders have lost their Super 14 rugby semi-final against South Africa's Bulls in Pretoria, going down 36-23 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

The defending champions led 20-7 after 25 minutes, but the Bulls pulled away to lead 27-20 at half-time and their first five eighth Morne Steyn went on to set a Super 14 record with four drop goals.

The Bulls scored three tries to the Crusaders' two. All Black halfback Andy Ellis also dropped a goal.

The result means the Bulls will host the final against the Chiefs in a week.
