Southern hemisphere rugby officials are considering a radical new plan to help crowds understand some of the confusing decisions made by referees.
Australian Rugby Union deputy chief executive Matt Carroll said officials were thinking about giving Super 14 referees microphones so they could explain their decisions to the crowd, as happens in American football.
One of the most common complaints about rugby is the confusion around the awarding of some penalties, particularly involving technical issues at the breakdown and set-pieces.
Carroll said a proposal to trial the system had been forwarded to the South African, New Zealand and Australian Rugby board for possible consideration but no decision had been made.
