Newcastle relegated from Premiership

7:26 am on 27 May 2009

Newcastle have become the biggest English Premier League football casualties since Leeds dropped out of the top flight five years ago after a final-day defeat at Aston Villa condemned Alan Shearer's side to relegation.

Newcastle lost 1-0, Middlesbrough lost 2-1 at West ham, while Hull survived by a point despite losing 1-nil to manchester United.

Shearer was Newcastle's fourth manager this season and he says the writing has been on the wall for a few years.

In other results Liverpool beat Tottenham 3-1, Chelsea beat Sunderland 3-2, Arsenal beat Stoke City 4-1, Everton beat Fulham 2-0, Manchester City beat Bolton 1-0, Wigan beat Portsmouth 1-0 and Blackburn and West Brom drew nil-all.
