The world's second ranked golfer Phil Mickelson's expressed optimism about his wife Amy's breast cancer, saying that doctors believe they've diagnosed the condition early.

Mickelson suspended his PGA Tour campaign indefinitely last week after his wife was diagnosed with cancer.

He had been scheduled to defend his title at this week's Colonial Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas and his participation in next month's US Open at Bethpage in New York is also in doubt.

Mickelson, a three-times major winner, added that he and his wife had been uplifted by the generous support they had received from PGA Tour players and their wives, and others around the world.
