This year's Russian Open called off

The Russian Open golf tournament has been cancelled this year because of the global financial crisis.

Organisers says they had to cancel the August event because their main sponsor had backed out and while they'd managed to raise much of the money they were still well short.

Russian real estate company Inteco, which guaranteed last year's prize money, was forced to pull out because of the difficult economic situation.

The Russian Open, held at a picturesque course at the Moscow Country Club just north of the capital, has been part of the main European Tour since 2003. The tournament has seen a steady growth over the last few years.
