Cronulla chairman steps down as fallout from group sex scandal continues

The fallout from the Cronulla Sharks group sex scandal in Christchurch continues, with club chairman Barry Pierce quitting the board of the troubled National Rugby League club.

Pierce, who's been involved with the club for over 20 years, was re-elected unopposed and handed life membership of the Sharks' Leagues club just last week.

But he's been under pressure since details of a 2002 group sex scandal involving several players were revealed, just one of a number of off-field incidents that has affected the financially-strapped club this season.

Pierce's resignation comes two days after Paul Gallen resigned the club's captaincy after being fined for racially abusing St George Illawarra's Mickey Paea during a match
