Symonds sent home from Twenty20 World Cup

The Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds is being sent home from the World Twenty20 tournament in England for breaking a number of team rules related to alcohol and other issues.

Captain Ricky Ponting expressed his disappointment at what turned out to be the last straw for Symonds, who had barely scraped into the World Cup squad, and had a long history of

testing the team's patience with his off-field behaviour.

Cricket Australia announced last night it's decision to remove Symonds from the tour following a recommendation by the team leadership group, which includes Ponting and the vice-captain Michael Clarke.

Symonds' Australian contract, which he retained only last month, is also now under review.
