Sampras says Federer greatest of all time

12:36 pm on 10 June 2009

Pete Sampras believes Roger Federer would have gone down as the greatest tennis player of all time even if he hadn't completed a career grand slam.

That Federer tied Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam titles by winning the French Open has only reinforced Sampras' view.

The French Open was the only title to have so far eluded Federer but that changed when he beat Swede Robin Soderling in straight sets in Paris, winning 6-1 7-6 6-4.

Sampras says what Federer's done over the past five years has never been achived previously and probably won't again.

Federer adds his first French Open championship to five Wimbledon titles, five US Open wins and three Australian Open titles and is the sixth man with a career Grand Slam.

Federer will get his first chance to break Sampras' mark at Wimbledon in a fortnight.
