Flu forces Swimming NZ to change plans

Swimming New Zealand will make alternative plans to prepare for next month's world championships after their warm-up meet in Melbourne was cancelled.

Swimming Australia has cancelled next week's planned Grand Prix meet in Melbourne because of the increased risks and quarantine levels surrounding the H1N1 Influenza A outbreak.

The Grand Prix was to be the New Zealand team's main shakedown before next month's FINA World Championships in Rome.

The general manager of performance and pathways at Swimming New Zealand, Jan Cameron, says the decision's prudent and in the best interests of the swimmers.

She says alternatives before the championships could include other international competitions or time trials in New Zealand or in Australian states not as affected by the virus.
