Rosberg holds off Webber top win British GP

7:15 am on 1 July 2013

The German driver Nico Rosberg held off the retiring Mark Webber then escaped a stewards penalty to win a dramatic British Grand Prix at Silverstone, giving the Mercedes team its first victory in Britain since 1955.

Rosberg got off with a caution for failing to slow for yellow flags, holding on to his 7-tenths of a second victory over a charging Webber in a race overshadowed by a dangerous spate of Pirelli tyre blowouts, including one that blew the hopes of the home hero Lewis Hamilton.

Third place went to Fernando Alonso, who closed the gap on the championship leader Sebastian Vettel to 21 points, Lewis Hamilton was fourth, followed by Kimi Raikkonen, Adrian Sutil, and the rising Australian hope Daniel Ricciardo.

Vettel had to retire his Red Bull for the first time this year after inheriting the lead.

The German grand prix is this Sunday night.
