Pirelli strengthens tyres for German Grand Prix

6:26 am on 3 July 2013

The Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli is to strengthen its tyres for this weekend's German Formula One Grand Prix after a series of dangerous blow-outs at Silverstone last weekend.

Pirelli will make the rear tyres' internal belt with the high-strength synthetic fibre Kevlar instead of the usual steel to reduce temperatures and the risk of punctures.

Safety concerns were expressed after the British Grand Prix in which six cars suffered blow-outs.

Only the rear tyres will be changed this weekend, although a complete change will be introduced for the Hungarian GP at the end of the month using the 2012 design, which is different to that used this year.
