Officials back Webb's mysterious changing mind

FIFA officials have backed the referees who changed a crucial decision in the Confederations Cup football match between Egypt and Brazil on Tuesday.

With the scores locked at 3-3 late in the game after a spectacular comeback from the African champions, a ball was cleared from the line by an Egyptian defender, who seemed to use his arm.

A corner was the initial decision but then referee Howard Webb gave a penalty, incensing the Egyptians and raising questions over how Webb came to change his mind, as video technology isn't used in football.

The defender was sent off and Brazil converted the spot kick to win 4-3.

Egypt had lodged a complaint, claiming the penalty was awarded illegally on the basis of video evidence.
