Alker turns season around in Utah

7:50 am on 16 July 2013

The Hamilton golfer Steven Alker has won the Utah Championship on the second tier web.com Tour in the United States.

The 41-year-old shot a five-under-par 66 in the final round to finish tied with Australian Ashley Hall at 22-under-par.

Alker then won the tournament on the first sudden death playoff hole.

The win is his third on the tour and first in four years, and earns him $144,000.

It marks quite a turnaround in form for Alker this year, having begun the week at 153rd on tour money list.

Alker's victory is set to push him into the top 20 on the tour's order of merit, giving him a good chance of qualifying for the PGA Tour next year, with the top 25 automatically qualifying.

His last victory came at the New Zealand PGA Championship at Clearwater in 2009.

Fellow New Zealanders Tim Wilkinson and Danny Lee are currently seventh and eight respectively on the tour money list, all but securing their PGA Tour cards.
