Wallace gets the nod as Lions flanker for tes

Ireland's David Wallace has edged out Martyn Williams of Wales for the key position of openside flanker when British and Irish Lions coach Ian McGeechan named his team for the first rugby test against South Africa.

There were no real surprises and few even contentious selections in the team for Sunday morning's clash in Durban, with Williams named among the replacements after a shoulder injury limited his involvement in the provincial games.

Welshman Alun Wyn Jones got the nod as the second lock, as his athleticism complements the more solid qualities of captain Paul O'Connell, while Gethin Jenkins and Phil Vickery are the props with Lee Mears at hooker.

Tom Croft will start at blindside flanker, with Jamie Heaslip at number eight.

There was no place in the 22 for 2008 world player of the year Shane Williams as the Welsh wing has struggled to reproduce his best form this season or on tour, or giant England prop Andrew Sheridan.
