The success of the New Zealand under-20 rugby side at the world champs in Tokyo has been tinged with sadness, with the father of winger Zac Guildford collapsing and dying at final.

Just after New Zealand beat England 44-28, it's understood Robert Guildford suffered a heart attack and couldn't be resuscitated at the ground or at the local hospital.

Robert Guildford was a former Wairarapa Bush player who played 39 games for the province between 1992 and 1996.

In recent years, he had seen his son rise to prominence as a national age-grade, Hawke's Bay and Hurricanes winger, while also winning back to back world titles with the New Zealand Under 20 teams.
