World swimming's govering body FINA has approved a list of swimsuits which have caused controversy in recent months for the apparent performance advantage they give in the water.
But FINA says it may ban the suits for next year and has not confirm world records set by French sprinters Frederic Bousquet and Alain Bernard who eclipsed times performed by Australian Eamonn Sullivan.
Bernard wore Arena's 'X-Glide suit', which is part-polyurethane, when he set a new 100 world record of 46.94sec at the French championships in April.
FINA says the record is not recognised as his suit is "non-approved".
Bousquet wore the all-polyurethane 'Jaked 01', when he beat Sullivan's previous best world mark of 21.28 in the 50m in a time of 20.94 and FINA says his time will be approved pending a doping test.
The list approved by FINA overnight is for the whole of 2009, including the world championships in Rome on July 26-August 2.
