Queen grunter plans to pump up the volume

Michelle Larcher de Brito has vowed to pump up the volume at Wimbledon after the Portuguese scream queen marked her All-England Club debut with a 6-2 7-5 victory over Klara Zakopalova in the first round.

The powerful 16-year-old made a noisy impact at this year's French Open by wailing like a banshee during rallies and infuriated Aravane Rezai to such an extent that she complained to the umpire.

Larcher de Brito was booed off court and immediately compared to notorious grunters Monica Seles and Maria Sharapova, with the International Tennis Federation responding by threatening to create a "noise hindrance" rule.

Her first appearance at the usually tranquil All-England Club was expected to create even more mayhem, but she was relatively subdued during a routine win.

But later she said the screeching reaches fever pitch only when matches get especially intense, and she has no intention of making a special effort to tone it down during key moments and people don't like it they can leave.
