Third seed Andy Murray had to work hard in his first round at Wimbledon, beating American Robert Kendrick in 4 sets on Centre Court.
The 22-year-old, hoping to end Britain's more than 70-year wait for a men's singles champion at the grasscourt grand slam, faltered in the second-set tiebreak as an inspired Kendrick threatened to produce a huge shock.
The 76th-ranked Kendrick began to run out of steam thereafter as Murray, a quarter-finalist at the French Open, showed his superior class to regain control.
One break of serve was all that was needed in the third set and a relieved Murray edged a break ahead in the fourth before serving out for victory on his second match point.
