French liar on the mat

2:32 pm on 26 June 2009

The president of the French Rugby Federation has issued a statement apologising to the New Zealand Rugby Union and the public following the admission by the 20 year old centre Mathieu Bastareaud that he lied about being attacked by up to five people after last weekend's second test in Wellington.

Since his return home, Basteraud has admitted he was drunk when he returned to the team's hotel in the early hours of Sunday morning, and injured himself when he stumbled and fell, concocting a story about being attacked to avoid being sent home.

Pierre Camou has ordered the French Rugby Union's disciplinary committee to open an inquiry.
