The Italian swimmer Federica Pellegrini reclaimed the women's 400 metres freestyle world record when she took gold in the final at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara.

Pellegrini swam four minutes 00.41 seconds to take back the record from Britain's Joanne Jackson.

Meanwhile Germany's double Olympic champion Britta Steffen has set a world record in the 100 metres freestyle for the second time this week.

The 25-year-old, who won Olympic gold in the 50 and 100 metres freestyle in Beijing, set the record in the final of the German national championships with a time of 52.56 seconds, taking nearly three-tenths of a second off the mark she set on Friday.
