The British and Irish Lions scrum coach Graham Rowntree says comments by the controversial Springboks coach Peter De Villiers appearing to condone eye-gouging are "crass and pathetic".
The former Leicester, England and Lions prop says De Villiers was completely out of order and it's good he's had to back off.
Rowntree says he's been gouged and there's no place in the game for it.
He says he can't understand how a player can think he can get away with it with so many cameras watching the game .
Rowntree says increased bans are probably the only way for the IRB to cut out gouging.
