ARU says Tuqiri termination has nothing to do with police

6:15 pm on 2 July 2009

The Australian Rugby Union boss John O'Neill says the termination of star winger Lote Tuqiri contract is not due to any police matter.

Tuqiri was cut from his lucrative deal yesterday but the ARU has refused to disclose the reasons.

O'Neill fronted the media today but remains tightlipped, citing legal reasons.

O'Neill confirmed the police were not involved and says he'd consolidated with Tuqiri's Super 14 club the NSW Waratahs and they had agreed with the decision.

O'Neill confirmed he had warned Tuqiri in an August 2007 letter that further breaches of the players code of conduct would not be tolerated.

He described suggestions he had a personal agenda against Tuqiri as "ridiculous" and says the winger's massive salary was not a consideration.
