Serena Williams wins Wimbledon title

8:18 am on 5 July 2009

Serena Williams has clinched her third Wimbledon tennis title and 11th Grand Slam crown with a straight sets victory in the final over her sister Venus, the defending champion.

Serena won the first set in a tiebreak then cruised through the second 6-2 to shatter Venus's hopes of her third straight Wimbledon crown and sixth overall title in London, which would have taken her level with the great Billie Jean King.

It was the fourth all-Williams title match-up at Wimbledon and eighth in all Grand Slams with the win giving Serena the edge in head-to-head meetings at 11-10.

Of the eight major finals the sisters have faced each other in, Serena has won six.

The Williams sisters must be used to the joy and heartbreak, they've taken it in their stried and gone on to win the Wimbledon women's doubles title, beating Australian duo Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs in straight sets.

Roger Federer and Andy Roddick play off for the men's singles title tonight.
