Black Sticks downed in first Test

7:00 am on 4 July 2009

The New Zealand women's hockey team has been beaten 7-4 by Argentina in the first Test in Whangarei.

The number two ranked Argentina won the first of the three-Test series in a frenetic, high scoring spectacle, the match starting with four goals in the first eight minutes.

By the end of the half nine had been scored and Argentina were ahead 6-3.

While the number of goals conceded would have concerned New Zealand coach Mark Hager, the Black Sticks also looked very promising up front and converted well. The pace of not just the strikers, but the midfield was impressive.

Gemma Flynn was the pick of the strikers and Anna Thorpe also contributed well.

The next match is in Whangarei at 4pm tomorrow.
