Steel beat Swifts to stay in playoff chase

4:34 pm on 4 July 2009

The Southern Steel have beaten the New South Wales Swifts 55-48 in Invercargill to retain a chance of making the playoffs in netball's trans-Tasman championship.

The Steel led at each quarter and with goal attack Donna Wilkens missing only 2 of her 38 shots they move two points clear of the Queensland Firebirds.

They're also 11 goals ahead but they'll have to wait until Monday night when the percentage margins are calculated after the FIrebirds play the West Coast Fever in Perth.

If the Steel go through they'll play the third-placed Thunderbirds in Adelaide in the minor semi-final.

The major semi-final will be between the Melbourne Vixens and the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic, who play the Thunderbirds in Adelaide tomorrow.
