Briton Mark Cavendish has won stage three on the Tour de France while seven-times champion Lance Armstrong improved to third in the overall standings.

Cavendish outsprinted Norway's Thor Hushovd at the end of the nearly 200-kilometre stage from Marseille along the Mediterranean coast to win his second straight stage.

The Swiss Fabian Cancellara retains the overall lead from the German Tony Martin with Lance Armstrong only 40 seconds behind Cancellara.

The hot favourite Alberto Contador dropped to fourth overall, 59 seconds off the pace.
