12:49 pm on 7 July 2009

The Waikato golfer James Gill has started well in his bid to become the sixth New Zealander to qualify for the British Open, starting next week at Turnberry in Scotland.

In one of the final three 36-hole qualifying tournaments near Glasgow, Gill is tied for second after an opening round of 69 at Gailes Links, to be two shots from the lead.

Only the top four from the field of 96 will make the Open field.

The other New Zealander Emmerson Hall can't possibly make it after a round of 82 at Western Gailes.
